Nursing is one of the most demanding vocations around. Nurses have to deal with lives on a daily basis. Beyond that, they’re expected to embody resilience, compassion and courage, while simultaneously presenting rock-solid professionalism to both doctors and patients. The truth is they’re often unsung heroes who don’t expect applause or glory, because as far as everyone’s concerned, they’re just doing their job.
Nurses are important in managing a health crisis because they are a vital link between the patient and the rest of the health care team. They are with their patients 24 x 7, and through critical thinking and decision making they are able to notice subtle changes in their patients which indicates that her patient is de-compensating or getting worse or getting better. They are able to determine the human response to the medical problem. Nurses relay their assessment findings to providers, they are able to determine if respiratory therapy needs to be called, they are able to assess the patient’s response to medical treatments, and they educate the patients and the family members, providing a listening ear or a calming touch.
The nurses response world-wide to this crisis has moved nursing into a global spotlight in a way that calling it ‘year of the nurse’ never would otherwise have been justified. Nurses have proved to be the health warriors who have taken on the responsibility very willingly with their heart and soul. The profession is central to tackling the pandemic and, nurses in every country, have “stepped up and stepped beyond” their calling. They are working in the forefront and are managing patient screenings, placement as well the care of patients in the COVID zone. Nurses are working round the clock, pushing themselves to the limit and putting their lives on the line, very often with limited resources.
Globally there is already a change to the way the world is viewing nurses and health care professionals. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought nurses to the forefront of people’s minds and the media attention and public gratitude towards health care professionals is being captured on a daily basis. As not everyone understands what happens in a heath care facility, and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of the contribution of the nurses to health care prevention & promotion.
Indian government has tried to overcome the covid effect by the action on:-
⮚ Lock-down was introduced to break the chain of Covid-19 infection across the country
⮚ Sanitization operation was introduced across the country with WHO guidelines and public places hospital areas was sanitized govt instructed all the healthcare workers to follow guidelines and do proper sanitize all the containment zone.
⮚ Social distancing awareness campaign by social media.
⮚ Rapidly action on all aspects of COVID-19 protection's (Quarantine procedures, covid centers ).
Many nurses fought with COVID and lost their life. We should salute their dedication and feel proud be a part of this profession.
My journey started as a nurse in Medanta Hospital, Delhi. I have had wonderful experiences, each day with unique experiences with patient and they became my best teacher. Slowly I improvised my skill and was able to handle patients from different places with different languages. I experienced that patient satisfaction is directly proportional to good nursing care. I also believe that preparing nurse warriors for a crisis by theoretical, practical and psychological education is very important and this preparation should be from university education to continuous education. If there is preparation for crises, they can be prevented or controlled, so we have to recognize them based on their already learned lessons and prepare hospitals and staff to confront them. I feel proud working as a nursing professional. Your patient and the experience you receive from them prune the professional skill. I am a Nurse Midwife and I am always proud to say that!!
I hope one day we will defeat the COVID-19 pandemic with the help of COVID warriors.
